Sophomore competes at state tennis

Sophomore Breanna Howard placed first at regional securing a spot to play at state on May 17-19.
“Regionals was good, I reached my goal of going to state,” Howard said. “I felt proud that I achieved what I was striving for and that I played better than I did last year.”
Howard plans to place well at state.
“I’m happy to be able to compete,” she said. “I am going to play one point at a time, and to put my heart into it. I play a girl from Grove first and plan to compete.”
Junior Jacob Wilhelm and his partner Cox placed third at the regional tournament making them the alternate for state.
“Regionals was wonderful,” Wilhelm said. “We did much better than we expected we would.”
Because the second place qualifier had a conflict alternate freshman Davis Mays was allowed to play and then placed third at regionals.
“Regional was a good experience for me,” Mays said. “It helped me see what I am going to play against in the future.”
Sophomore Justin Mabry said even though it was their first year he partner junior Brian De La Rosa played better than expected.
“The teams we played were a lot tougher than the ones we played in district but we did much better than either of us thought we would,” Mabry said.
Last year was the first uear the school had students play at the regional tournament. Coach Haley Owen said that this season exceeded any expectations that she had for the year. She is so proud of everyone who came out and competed.
“I feel like everyone improved and I am so glad Breanna took care of unfinished business,” Owen said. “I know that she will do great and represent us well at state.”
