Four-day school week:
November 19, 2021
Many school districts in Texas are beginning to change their schedules to a four day week in order to alleviate budgetary issues, attract teachers and reduce student absences. I believe this would be a very beneficial change at ACISD.
Changing to a four-day school week boosts student and teacher morals. Teachers and students are overall happier when they have an extra day off. They come back at the start of the workweek feeling refreshed and focused. Their minds will come back clearer, rested, and ready to go to work.
I believe that student attendance will increase if there was only four days in a school week. Students will most likely be more excited to see the people they haven’t seen in 3 days.
Changing to a four day school week would allow student that work on the weekends a whole extra day for work. Many students work on the weekends but because of them having five school days, they only get to work for 2 days. An extra day would be very beneficial to working students, not only to allow more time to work, but to give them a chance over the weekend to complete their homework without hvaing to complete it at 10 p.m. when they get off of work. This would allow students to get the sleep they need, and ultimately have better focus throughout the school week.
The day off would also give teachers more time for planning and collaboration. Many teachers would use the day off for professional development and preparing for the upcoming week.
The change can provide students and teachers more time with their families. Family time is a very important part of American culture. I believe many parents and teachers would use the day off for family activities. This day would bring families closer together and it would strengthen their bond.
The change can be a great recruiting tool for hiring and attracting new teachers. Many teachers are on board with changing to a four-day week. It is an attractive element for many teachers. Teachers looking for a job are more often to look to a school with a four-day week.
A four-day week and a three-day weekend would allow students to perform better on their work, increase motivation, and overall improve the behavior at school. Students get tired and start acting out because their attention span can only last so long. Therefore, a four-day week would mean more condense work on week days, which would keep students occupied and focused.
Overall, the benefits of having a four-day school week outweigh any possible negatives. Even with the more studious workload it would require while in school, this schedule would benefit student well-being and performance, which would in turn reflect well on the school.
