With the upcoming school year, a new organization has been put into place for the high school.
The NEW service organization stands for Newly Entering Wildcats.
“It is our unique way of welcoming new students,” Principal John Sherrill said.
Sherrill said it is a win-win for both current students and new students also.
“It allows the students who have been here to talk about the Archer community and being a Wildcat,” Sherrill said. “It’s also a partnership that allows the new students to have a guide as they come into a new school because that can be quite intimidating.”
Junior Sawyer Risinger said he was scared about coming into a new school.
“As a new kid, I was nervous about entering different surroundings after going to Holiday for many years before,” Risinger said.
Risinger said he is now open to learning more about this new environment.
“I want to learn the traditions and be able to be apart of anything I can help in,” Risinger said.
Sherrill said when he saw the enrollment for this year, the school has 20 students (as of then) that are new to the district.
“By using what the administrative team learns at conferences and about best practices, we thought this program would benefit all students here,” he said.
Sherrill said this program is for anyone who values being a Wildcat.
“We will meet with the volunteers, and we’ll talk about leadership and develop a common understanding of what’s important for being a Wildcat,” Sherrill said.
Sophomore Jaedin Kim said he is excited to learn how to be a good student with morals.
“I want to learn how to be a Wildcat and be the best I can be at it,” Kim said.
The incoming students will be led and guided by a volunteer.
“The ones participating will be paired with one of the new students and given tours,” Sherrill said.
Kim said he is looking forward to seeing more of the school.
“This school is nice, and I would like to take in more of the history and how this school came about,” Kim said.
Sherrill said he hopes this positively affects all kinds of students.
“We have a great culture and lots of positive experiences as a student body, and I hope it creates a way for our new students to understand those experiences and get to participate as much as anyone else,” Sherrill said.
