FFA members are preparing for District Leadership Development Events on Nov. 8 at Midwestern State University.
Sponsor Ryan Crafton said his students prepare by practicing in their own time.
“I often will have members come in and practice over their FFA speech.
Crafton said giving the FFA Creed speech requires more than just words being spoken.
“Along with the body and verbal language, students also have to completely understand the creed. Not only the meaning behind it but they also have to have some sort of connection with the speech to fully comprehend it,” Crafton said.
FFA senior president Victoria Foster participates in Senior Creed Speaking.
“This is an individual event where students go in and say the FFA Creed by memory, then answer at most three questions about the creed,” Foster said. “In the process, judges will review both your nonverbal and verbal communication.”
“I practice daily and will use my spare time to look over the creed. I did it last year as a junior, so I have most of it down,” she said.
“I need to practice my non-verbal communication as it plays a major role when giving my speech. I think when the time comes around, I will be ready for district,â Foster said.
Senior Vice President Zoey Hastings partakes in the radio team.
“The team consist of me, (juniors) Adrena Denton, Talynn Lowe and senior Jonathan Clay. All we have to do is talk through a radio. The judges wonât see us at all,” Hasting said.
Hastings said she and her team practices during any free time they get.
“When I practice, I will mainly work on my verbal skills. I did this event as a junior, but it is always best to rehearse over this skill,” she said.
“Our weakness is not paying attention to our parts and not knowing our order of speaking,” Hastings said.
