Traditions like going to grandma’s house to make cookies come to life as the holiday season is here.
“Every year around Christmas time, I make my pumpkin bread,” junior Tillee Bardwell said. “It is one of my favorite winter recipes because it is fun to make since I make it in coffee cans”
People begin baking their favorite holiday recipes as the winter season approaches.
“My favorite winter recipe is homemade fruitcake,” home economics teacher Donette Odom said.
Odom said her fruitcake recipe has been passed down through her family.
“My grandma used to make it,” Odom said. “It is made with vanilla wafers, heavy cream and you’re favorite candied fruits.”
Junior Aliyah Gilbert said her favorite thing to help bake is banana bread.
“We always make my pappy’s banana bread recipe,” Gilbert said. “It is so good and it’s the best banana bread I’ve probably ever had.”
During the winter, Odom says she makes lots of different soups.
“My family always looks forward to seeing what surprise soup I’m going to make next,” Odom said.
Senior Zoey Hastings said she always has homemade cheesecake.
“My grandma always makes homemade cheesecake at Christmas time,” Hastings said. “She makes strawberry and cherry and it is the best cheesecake ever and the main reason I show up to Christmas dinner.”
Hastings said another one of her favorite desserts is her mom’s banana nut bread.
“The recipe has been in the family for a while and my mom makes it the best,” Hastings said.
Bardwell said her family doesn’t have the traditional Christmas meal.
“We make green chile and cheese enchiladas,” Bardwell said. “We have them for Christmas every year and they are my favorite.”
Odom said during the winter season she loves to make different types of Christmas candies.
“I always make Christmas candies like pecan brittle, divinity, puppy chow, and different fudges,” Odom said. “I put them out for everyone to have and enjoy.”
Bardwell said her favorite desert that her family always has during Christmas time is a cake that her grandma makes.
“I love this mocha cake that my nanny bakes,” Bardwell said. “It is my favorite.”
