FFA members are preparing for Career Development Events. Their first meet is on March 6.
“Right now I haven’t decided who is part of the official teams,” FFA sponsor Ryan Crafton said. “The teams that are official are my dairy team and livestock team. Members of the dairy cattle team are (sophomore) Jetzyre Miranda, (junior) Jesse Cantu and (senior) Estefani Zea Monroy. Members of the livestock team are (seniors) Zoey Hastings, Johnathan Clay, (junior) Sam Gilmore and (eighth grader) Wayland Cowley.”
Crafton said the wildlife team is still undecided.
“Only person that I know for sure to be on the team is senior Victoria Foster,” Crafton said.
“Second semester is the most busiest time for my CDE’s members. For March we have three events. Our second meet is on the 26th at Glen Rose. Only the wildlife will go to this event,” Crafton said. “On the 28th all the teams will go to the meet in West Texas.”
Cantu is part of the dairy cattle team. This is Cantu’s first year doing CDE’s.
“The difficult part for me is memorizing the questions,” Cantus said. “There is a total of 350 questions to memorize, but Mr. Crafton has me and my teammates Estefani and Jetzyre memorizing 50 questions and testing on them each week.”
Cantu said he has help from home too.
“For the evaluating the dairy cattle part, I am having help from my grandfather. He was a dairy cattleman so he for sure is the man to ask for help in this situation,” he said. “My grandfather is also helping me on memorizing the questions for our CDE’s.”
Hastings is part of the livestock judging team. This will be her third and last year doing it.
“I am preparing this year by taking practice quizzes over the anatomy, how to keep them healthy and the different type of breeds,” Hastings said. “I also watch practice classes to jog my memory on what to look for how to point out the differences.”
Hastings said the biggest challenge for her is definitely the quizzes.
“There are so many questions they can choose from and they only pick 25 questions out of the 350,” she said.
