Education is meant to give everyone a fair shot at a bright future. However, the Texas Education Allotment is continuing to become more inadequate to meet the needs of students. This issue limits students’ resources and their chances to receive a quality education.
The state of Texas should increase funding for schools to give students better opportunities.
Texas’ basic allotment per student funding is set at $6,160 and has remained at this amount since 2019. With inflation and the high prices now a days, this amount is outdated and makes it a struggle for schools to meet the basic needs of their students.
Due to low pay, teachers are leaving their profession because it can be hard to even get by off a teacher’s salary at this time. Shortage of teachers is not good for the future of our state and country, and this puts many students’ futures at risk.
There is an education gap within Texas that continues to grow because wealthier school districts get more funding through property tax. However, poorer districts are often less fortunate.
Therefore, Texas lawmakers should increase the basic allotment to adjust the funding for inflation to establish equality within education, and keep teachers doing their jobs.
