Walking into the theater, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the new “Snow White.”
The classic 1937 animated film is one of Disney’s most beloved fairy tales, so I was curious if this live-action adaptation would honor the original or try to reinvent it entirely. By the time the credits rolled, I had my answer: it does a little of both. The film presents a modernized Snow White, played by Rachel Zegler, who brings strength and depth to the character. This Snow White isn’t just a damsel waiting for rescue; she’s independent, intelligent and driven by a desire to lead her kingdom.
While I appreciated this fresh perspective, I couldn’t help but miss some of the whimsical charm of the original. The seven dwarfs, for example, have undergone a transformation that may divide audiences. Their redesign is ambitious, but it doesn’t quite capture the same magic or warmth as the original movie. Visually, the film is really good. The costumes, set designs and CGI elements create a fairy-tale world that feels both nostalgic and new. The evil queen, played masterfully by Gal Gadot, steals the show with her dramatic presence and eerie beauty. Her scenes are some of the most compelling in the film, and I found myself more captivated by her story line than Snow White’s at times.
One aspect that left me conflicted was the absence of the traditional songs. While the final outcome was beautiful, I couldn’t help but miss the iconic “Heigh-Ho” and “Someday My Prince Will Come.” The new songs are well-composed but lack the timeless quality of the originals.
Overall this “Snow White” is a great remake that will likely spark debate among fans of the original. It’s visually breathtaking, features strong performances and brings a more progressive take on the beloved heroine. But for those who cherish the classic’s simplicity and charm, this version may feel like a departure rather than a tribute. Whether that’s a good or bad thing depends entirely on what one looks for in a remake. The film takes me back to the time when I dreamed of being a princess.
