Thrifting is an eco-friendly way to express oneself, but also an alternative for people in need. Donated goods are sold at a lower price.
“I like to collect old stuff and see what other people had. Thrifting is really fun when you find the right things,” freshman Faith Franke said. “I feel good knowing I’m helping give money to the people in need. I think that the thrifting community has a really good cause going on.”
Thrifting keeps clothes out of landfills, reduces textile waste and lowers the outflow of carbon emission rates. When thrifting people can spend less money for more items.
“I thrift because sometimes I can find really cool things I like and outfits I want for way cheaper than the original price,” junior Madella Nicholson said. “Thrifting makes me feel excited and accomplished for saving time and money.”
Junior Alyssa Calhoun thrifts for herself and for others to find things she enjoys and will use.
“People really close to me used to struggle with money and thrifting helped them find a fun, cheap way of finding clothes for them and their family during hard times,” she said. “It makes me feel so much better when I give my things to them, knowing I am helping them and their families.”
Non-profit thrift stores like Goodwill and Faith Mission work with churches, shelters, housing and food assistance and hospice organizations.
“I like thrifting because I can see all the old clothes people wear, and I like the fact that they are way cheaper,” sophomore Chevy Wallace said. “I had no idea that thrift stores worked with charities. It makes me feel better knowing that I am helping people.”
Thrifting can be a bonding activity to bring people closer together. According to senior Emily Anderson.
“I just thrift because you can save money and my grandma used to thrift all the time and we used to go thrifting together,” Anderson said. “It makes me feel good, and I love that they are also giving to charities.”
