The golf team is getting ready to tee off the season with new members.

Golf Coach Donny Gray said he is ready for this season to get started.

“I think we have a chance to be a complete team this year. While losing someone like Morgan Wylie (who went to Austin four years consecutively) always has an impact, we’ll be fine this season,” Coach Gray said.

For the first time in recent years, more players are trying out for the team than can play.

“There are going to be two sets of teams with five players on each team,” Coach Gray said, “but only the top four lowest scores count.”

Coach Gray also said the players that did well last year will be able to keep their spots on the first team.

“To choose who gets to be on what team, they’ll play a practice match against one another,” Coach Gray said. “Especially for the ones that want to make it higher up, there are going to be challenges that they can do.”

Senior Conner Byrd advanced to the regional golf tournament last year.

“When I went to regionals, it was a new and fun experience because I had Morgan Wylie to show me the ropes on how it’s done since he had gone four times before,” Byrd said.

While making it to the regional and state tournaments is what some players aim for, others have different reasons for playing.

“Honestly, I play because it’s a fun sport to play and I get to hang out with my friends in doing so,” junior Blake Dunkel said. “While it would be awesome to go to regionals, I just enjoy being around my buddies.”
