The varsity boys basketball team is set on making it to the playoffs, with a record of 5- 3 in the district.
“We are at the end of district,” Deerinwater said. “We’ve played decently so far, but this part of the season is the most important because it will determine if we go to playoffs or not.”
The boys have been practicing almost every morning and afternoon.
“We start our Monday mornings in the weight room,” junior Landon Smith said. “ Then after school, we practice and watch film on the other team.”
Smith said Tuesdays are for games as well as Fridays.
“Wednesday and Thursday we usually have the same routine of working out in the morning and practicing in the afternoon,” Smith said. “This is a lot of hard work, but it has been paying off.”
The boys have set their personal and team goals for this year.
“My personal goal is to average double digits in points each game,” Smith said. “ I have made this goal almost every time. I just hope I can keep my points up.”
Smith said his team goals include making playoffs.
Junior Kellar Crow said that he just wants to finish off the season on good terms.
“This season has been fun already, but I want to be able to finish with a good end,” Crow said. “Playoffs is definitely on all of our minds.”
Deerinwater’s team goal is to have a winning record.
“Our team goal is to stay positive in our wins,” Deerinwater said. “I also hope we get past the first round and go as far as we can into the playoffs.”
Deerinwater’s personal goal is to have 100 steals by the end of the year.
“I know at the beginning of the year I had 31 steals,” Deerinwater said. “I’m not sure how many I have now, but I’d say I’m pretty close to my goal.”
Deerinwater also has a goal for his senior year.
“My last year of basketball I want to reach 1,000 career points,” Deerinwater said. “This is a goal I’ve had since I was little and I hope I can obtain it.”
Senior Kline Mayo said he expects good things out of this year’s team.
“I expect us to go to playoffs,” Mayo said. “We work hard for it every day. I want this to end as my best year of basketball and I expect no less. Because it is my senior year I’ve pushed everyone a little harder to make sure our goals are met.”
