The Prowlin’ Growlin’ Wildcat Band is preparing for concert season, which will include the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest March 26 and their spring concert that is tentatively scheduled for May 8.
“Our goal right now is to continue improving our musicianship individually, which will benefit the entire band,” head band director Anthony Flores said. “We are at different levels in our high school band and working on getting everyone to the same level before the end of the school year.”
Junior Seth Kinzie said he has been practicing at home to prepare for the sight reading contest.
“I think one of our strengths as a band is sight reading,” Kinzie said. “We are trying to improve at blending different sections of the music together.”
The band has adjusted the curriculum for fifth and sixth graders to ensure they are prepared for junior high band.
“We need to improve with our dynamics when we play, but I’m pretty confident with our music pieces and how the band has been practicing,” freshman Lanalynn Coffman said.
Eighth grader Kynleigh Schroeder said the band has been doing a good job playing and knowing the music.
“We go over our music every day to be sure that everyone knows their part,” Schroeder said. “We should probably work on being more focused during practices.”
Flores said they have been dedicating more rehearsal time to fundamentals like “scales, rhythmic exercises, sight reading exercises, balance and tuning.”
“Our main goal is to continue growing our band program and creating more opportunities to perform individually and in various ensembles,” Flores said. “When you have a small ensemble, every part is important.”
