The varsity softball team started off district on March 13 vs. Petrolia, and Coach Kent Kyle said he has high hopes for the girls this season.
Kyle said the softball girls should be able to compete for a district title and make a good run in playoffs.
“We will have to put all the new pieces in place, but I am very excited for the future of this team,” Kyle said.
Junior Addy Peters said she thinks they have a lot of potential.
“I think we have a good shot at doing well this season, especially if we stay focused and work together,” Peters said.
Freshman Millie Mayo said she believes they will go far.
“I think we will have a good season,” Mayo said.
Peters said they have a lot of talent.
“Our biggest strengths are hitting and defense,” Peters said. “We have people that can track the ball well and find ways to get on base and score runs.”
Sophomore Brilee Canada said the team has a few weaknesses but she thinks they are an easy fix if they just work hard.
“One of our biggest weaknesses is that we lose focus and the other teams take control when we are on the field,” Canada said.
Kyle said the goal is to win the district title.
“If we do the little things correctly, that is still a possibility, ”Kyle said
Mayo said that she hopes the team can continue to work together toward their goals.
“My personal goal is to play my best and have fun,” Mayo said. “The team goal needs to be work hard and work together to win.”
Canada said she expects this season to be exciting with all the talent.
“Although we have some adjustments to be made, having lots of new players has brought new talent to the table, and I think it will benefit us greatly in the long run,” Canada said.
Kyle said depth of talent is a wonderful thing, but with such a large group of girls, becoming a “family” takes longer.
“I believe that a team is like a family and we have to work hard for each other all the time,” Kyle said.
