Ashley Smith, single mother suffering from a meth addiction, is held captive in her own home by murderer Brian Nichols.  Ten years later, the movie “Captive” is produced to tell her story.

This crime, drama and thriller film is a great movie describing Ashley’s realization of the meaning of life and the defeat of her drug addiction. Smith saw that God had a purpose for her in a way that wasn’t apparent to her right then.

The true story was filmed in 10 different places in Canada.  The director of the movie was Jerry Jameson, and the writers were Brian Bird and Ashley Smith.

Actress Kate Mara played Ashley Smith.  She is also in the  movies “Fantastic Four,” “Fantastic Four 2,” “The Martian” and “Random Hearts.”  She won the Cinema Con Ensemble Award in the film “Fantastic Four” along with Jamie Bell, Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller.

David Oyelowo played Brian Nichols.  He was also a  part of the films “Selma,” “Interstellar,” “The Help” and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”  For his work in “Selma,” Oyelowo won the African-American Film Critics Association award as best actor, the Black Film Critics Circle Awards as best actor and ensemble and the Black Reel Award as Outstanding Actor.

Other important cast members are Michael Kenneth Williams (Detective John Chestnut) and Leonor Varela (Sergeant Carmen Sandoval).

Interesting facts about the movie are that the book Ashley reads to Brian Nichols is the best-selling book “Purpose Driven Life” by Pastor Rick Warren, and the blue truck Brian Nichols steals in the movie is the real vehicle that the real Nichols took.

Smith writes about her frightening experience in her book “Unlikely Angel.”
