Three students competed in the regional track meet on May 1.
Freshman Lyla Nichols and sophomore Ty Gary competed in high jump, and freshman Jesse Rodriguez competed in the 400 meter dash.
Nichols said that she could’ve done better at the regional meet.
“I definitely under performed at the regional track meet,” Nichols said. “Even though I didn’t do my best, I still believe it was a good experience for me to improve.”
Coach Tyler Owen said the jumpers had good feats as sophomore and freshman.
“Both jumpers did really well,” Owen said. “Before district, Ty was only jumping on JV, so he really stepped up and did well enough to advance twice.” Owen said they are now used to the new experience, which will have them prepared for next year.
“They definitely had a new experience while being there,” Owen said. “Jumping in a different environment helped them do better when next season comes around. Hopefully next year they have better and higher jumps which will help them place and maybe even advance further.”
Athletes also competed in the area track meet previous to the regional track meet.
Senior Serenity Jones, sophomores Millie Mayo and Lyndee McCord and freshman Emry Veitenheimer all participated in the 4×200 meter relay.
McCord said the relay team could’ve done better.
“We didn’t do as good as we hoped,” McCord said. “Although we didn’t perform well, we still tried our best. We definitely could’ve done handoffs better. To improve for next year, we can practice more during the season and improve our time.”
Coach Krissa England said she was proud of the relay team.
“They competed extremely hard,” England said. “They held their own and never gave up against the fast competition. To prepare for area, we ran often and worked on our handoffs. ”
Veitenheimer said they didn’t perform their very best.
“We absolutely could’ve done better at the regional track meet,” Veitenheimer. “Some things we could’ve done better are running harder and practicing more.”
