“Wicked: For Good,” the much anticipated sequel, was released on Nov. 21 starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda.
The movie begins with the Shiz school days in the past. Elphaba and Glinda are both now separated and haven’t seen each other in a while.
The Wizard played by Jeff Goldblum has become a full dictator which lead to the consequences that prove especially harsh for lions, tigers and bears.
Once upon a time, the animals of Oz had equal rights with humans, including the power of speech, but they have now been locked up or exiled.
“The is not the Oz I know,” Elphaba states as she releases all creatures from the cages in which they’re locked up.
Michelle Yeoh returns with a burst of magic, who plays the Wizard’s most ruthless and cruel ally.
Glinda has some inner conflict with the handsome Prince Fiyero played by Jonathan Bailey, now captain of the Wizard’s guard.
Prince Fiyero’s heart belongs to Elphaba, and even as he and Glinda are forced into a public engagement, the air is filled with emotion and trickery.
Munchkinland is now governed by Nessa Rose played by Marissa Bode, who does not share her sibling’s integrity.
The very confusing and conflicted sequel is a little off centered from the original movie.
It is a movie that is targeting more than just equal rights and justice; it also targets political manipulation.
The director wanted to display the movie from a different perspective, on how the power of friendship and how it could be better to work together even when times get tough.
Another theme is that people who may seem good are the opposite of good and people who seem evil may actually be good.
After watching the movie I felt a sense of confusion about the characters with so much going on between them. The trickery and secrets revealed at the end of the movie are something to make the mind think.
Overall the sequel to “Wicked” can be confusing but is also a good learning experience for any age.
