Over the summer, students attend a wide variety of camps and workshops to advance in their skills and meet new people.
Freshman Paislee Getts will be attending the band leadership camp at Howard Payne University from June 15-19.
“I am excited to learn more about conducting and what it takes to be a drum major,” Getts said. “I also can’t wait to play all of the games we do at camp.”
Freshman Kynleigh Schroeder will also be going to the leadership camp with Getts.
“Since it is my first year going, I don’t really know what to expect,” Schroeder said. “But I am ready to learn any new percussion skills and other ways to lead the band.”
Cheerleaders will attend a UCA Cheer Camp at the Gaylord Texan Resort from May 28 to June 1.
Sophomore Chevy Wallace will be going to camp this year.
“I love being able to meet other people from other teams and build relationships with all the other girls,” Wallace said.
Wallace said that she is excited to be returning for her third year in a row.
“Learning the new material and helping out newcomers is always so much fun,” she said.
Freshman Emry Veitenheimer said she is doing a lot to prepare for cheer camp.
“I am trying to stretch every day and am going to tumbling classes weekly to stay in shape and improve my skills,” Veitenheimer said.
This summer, journalists will participate in the Gloria Shields NSPA Media Workshop for the yearbook and newspaper editors. It will be from June 29 to July 1.
Junior Jocelyn Tedrow said she is excited to be returning to the workshop.
“I like being able to look at other schools’ themes and see what themes they have used,” Tedrow said.
Tedrow said that they are able to get a lot of work done at the workshop.
“We get to find ideas for next year’s yearbook with the help of our advisers,” Tedrow said.
Additionally, the FFA State Convention will be held at Fort Worth Convention Center from July 6-10. FFA officers, Talynn Lowe, Sam Gilmore, Brooklyn Roberts, Jesse Cantu, Noah Madsen, Brilee Canada, Cy Woolridge, and Gage McCord will be attending it.
“I’m excited to finally get my Lone Star Degree,” Gilmore said. “I have never been to FFA State Convention before, so I can’t wait to see the sights and experience something
new.”
