This year, many junior high students have faced issues because of the breakfast period being moved to before first period. Last year the breakfast period was between first and second period, giving the junior high students enough time to change into school clothes, brush hair and practice proper hygiene. The school provides free breakfast, so if this period was put back, it would give more opportunity for students to actually eat a nutritious meal before class.
This breakfast period needs to be added back to relieve stress from students and teachers.
First, the junior high students cannot control when the coaches release them to get ready for class. Many times these coaches don’t realize what time it is, and they don’t want to lose time from the athletics period. With a breakfast period implemented in the schedule, the coaches wouldn’t have to release athletes as early because they are not going to be counted tardy for being late to breakfast. When students don’t have enough time to change after athletics, the second period teachers don’t understand the rush these athletes are under. As a result, the teachers put the blame on the students and mark them tardy for being just moments late. This causes stress and anger between students and teachers because they usually end up getting in trouble for what the teachers think is dawdling.
Another example of problems being solved by the breakfast period being placed back in the school day is that many students complain about being hungry throughout the periods before lunch, and teachers complain about students eating in their class. This break would cause this problem to drastically decline. Although students are required to pay a small sum for cafeteria lunches, breakfast is not this way. A student can get a meal for completely free. More students would take advantage of this and eat earlier in the day.
Although individuals say that this period being added back would take away many half-day Fridays during the year, this would only cause problems one day a week. Junior high students feel the struggle of having to rush to second period everyday of the year, while having a full day on Fridays wouldn’t actually cause any problems for majority of individuals.
This simple change would solve many issues for junior high athletes, coaches and teachers. The school needs to add the period back for the benefit of many individuals.
