Cross country advances
Team prepared to run in ant weather and terrain
The varsity boys cross country team advanced to the regional meet on Oct. 23. On the team were Wes Hilbers, Kannon Rice, Daniel De La Rosa, Brian De La Rosa, Davis Mays and Justin Browning. The team advanced with Hilbers placing sixth and Rice placing eighth individually at district.
“The course was fairly rough,” cross country coach Amy Huseman said. “I am very proud of how the team ran this year at the regional meet.”
Hilbers intends to compete next year as well.
“I plan to place higher next year at district,” he said. “Then I plan to run harder next year at regionals.”
The varsity girls team placed fourth in district.
“I am extremely proud of the girls who came out to run,” Coach Huseman said.
Sophomore Vanessa Rater said she gave her best.
“It was very tough,” she said, “but I gave all of my effort.”
In the junior high boys division, Kameron Moss placed first at district.
“The boys were led by Moss,” Coach Huseman said. “He had won several meets he had participated in.”
Cross country can be a team or individual sport. Teams can contain five to seven runners.
“Cross country is a sport where everyone cheers for each other,” Coach Huseman said. “Although you want to be the one to finish first, you still encourage other runners.”
Coach Amy Huseman said she could count on her team whether it’s raining or snowing, and grassy or dirt terrain.
“The heat at the Bowie meet was a major factor. It was 100 degrees with no breeze,” she said. “The course at the Wichita Falls and the Rider meets were also challenging due to the fact that the course was ran mostly on tall grass. ”
Cross country team members ran 25-30 miles a week during their athletic period and after school.
“We try to run on different surfaces that allow our legs to adjust to the varying courses at each meet because of the different terrains,” she said.
