As the semester winds down, it feels like every senior I talk to is running on fumes; between college applications, exams, sports, jobs and trying to make the most of our lasts. Senior year exhaustion has hit full force.
While everyone warned us this year would be busy, no one really mentioned how tired it would make us mentally, physically and emotionally.
It’s strange because we’ve waited our whole lives for this moment. Senior year is supposed to be our final lap, the year of freedom and memories. But right now, it feels more like we’re dragging ourselves toward the finish line.
Keeping myself busy with sports and other extracurricular activities sometimes helps the time go fast but the late nights due to sports makes it hard to try to stay awake in class when nights don’t end until 12 or 1 a.m.
The burnout is real. Late-night homework sessions turn into early mornings. Motivation disappears the moment I sit down to study.
Even fun things like pep rallies and senior activities can feel exhausting when my brain wants a break. We’re balancing so much pressure: keeping grades up, making decisions about the future and saying goodbye to a chapter we’ve known our whole lives. It’s a lot for anyone, especially when we’re still figuring out who we are.
But here’s the thing: burnout doesn’t mean failure. It means we’ve been giving our all for a long time. It’s okay to slow down, take a breath and give ourselves some grace.
It is hard to try and make this year the best it can be when exhausting hits me like a train. But I think that if I wasn’t involved, I would look back later in life and wish I was. Although right now I feel as though I need a break, staying busy teaches me important life lessons.
Soon, we’ll look back and realize we made it through, tired, yes, but stronger, wiser and ready for whatever comes next.
