Despite the fact that a large portion of movies and TV shows are based on books, most people have only viewed the film adaptations and might not even be aware of the existence of their original source material as a book. Contrary to this common phenomenon, there is often more merit to the written version of these stories compared to the filmed version.
Books are able to show a reader what the author wanted them to see. Movies are repeatedly being cut short, or adding in details that were not in the initial novel due to issues with time, not having enough money in their budget or trying to keep viewers’ attention. They only allow people to see the important parts in the story, while books allow for smaller details that make it more engaging and interactive.
Additionally, books improve concentration and increase the flow of the brain by training it to focus on one thing for a certain amount of time and blocking out distractions. They help to reduce anxiety and stress by letting the brain rest for a moment and providing a way for people to escape from reality. Books have also been proven to help with development in small children, and screens, on the other hand, should to be used very little because they can negatively affect them physically and mentally.
Novels allow people to be able to imagine what they believe the author is trying to convey to the reader. With movies, people only see what other individuals assume elements of the book look like. Novels let readers envision the setting of the stories and the physical appearance of the characters. They encourage people to be more creative and think for themselves instead of being told or shown how they are “supposed” to see things.
Regardless, the argument still comes up, though, that movies are superior. People say that they are much more convenient to obtain and are much less time-consuming. However, books are just as easy to find in any store or online. Movies take up one and a half to three hours of a person’s day, while with books, a person can read at their own pace for as long as they choose. People only believe that movies are more convenient because they do not have to think about them as much.
Books are unappreciated for how they shaped society in the past and for what they could do today. They allow for an escape from reality and are great supports for mental health. They need to be given more attention and should be valued more than they are.
