Taylor Swift came out with a new album on Oct 3, “The Life Of A Showgirl.” Although I grew up listening to Taylor Swift and have been to several of her concerts, I’m very disappointed in her newest album.
She has several provocative lyrics in many of her songs. One of her songs called “Wood” has many inappropriate lyrics about her fiancé, Travis Kelce. As a young fan, I’m very disgusted by her use of words.
Swift is known for her “poem-like” lyrics because of how intelligent and educated they sound. But in this album it sounds like she’s trying to be like, in my opinion, Sabrina Carpenter. Carpenter is a pop star who sings about provocative actions. I’m not a huge fan of Carpenter because of the lyrics she chooses. Seeing Swift sing the same style of lyrics makes me sad because when I was younger, I looked up to her.
In another one of Swift’s new songs called “Father Figure,” Swift uses a controversial lyric about being able to make deals with the devil. As a Christian it’s sad to see one of my favorite artists say such inappropriate things. Of course speculation exists about Swift worshiping or making deals with the devil, but I’ve always tried to ignore them.
In Swift’s last few albums, every single song has been well written and had deep meanings. In her other albums like “The Tortured Poets Department,” “Folklore,” and “Evermore,” her lyrics have so much more meaning. When I listen to her songs on those albums, I feel like Swiftis actually making me feel feelings, but in her new album she sounds like she’s trying too hard to fit into the new generation of pop music. The new generation is all about boys and doing provocative things. I do not like listening to songs like this because in my opinion it’s disgusting.
It’s very disappointing as a “die hard” Taylor Swift fan to see who she has become. Some people say the whole point of this album is how she feels like she has to go outside of her comfort zone to stay relevant. I understand that Swift is getting older and it’s getting harder for her to appeal to her younger audience, but that doesn’t mean she has to sing about disgusting things.
Some people compare her new album to her album “Reputation”, but in that album she didn’t have as many lyrics. I wish Swift made more of her “poem-like” songs instead of her new style of lyrics.
