New Year’s Eve is a day to prepare starting the new year with a clean slate and happy times.
Sleeping on New Year’s Eve is a popular tradition among people.
“I get the Welch’s sparkling grape juice, and I watch the ball drop with my family,” senior Seth Kinzie said. “As soon as it’s midnight, my head hits the pillow, and I sleep until it’s literally next year.”
Certain foods are talked about bringing good luck and special feeling.
High school English teacher Savannah Grisham said she sets off fireworks and eats black eyed peas with family for good luck.
When people think of New Years gatherings, food and drinks come to mind, while others reflect on things special to them.
“I think about my family, going to my cousins house and visiting,” eighth grader Maci Casillas said. “We play games, eat and at the end of the night, we watch fireworks.”
People think eating grapes under the table will bring good luck and unbroken resolutions.
“On New Year’s Eve I sit under the kitchen table and eat 12 grapes in less than a minute,” sophomore Kaylee Washburn said. “I do this because it brings good luck and wishes granted.”
Big meals with family is a popular tradition around the world. Senior Ethan Pettibon says that his family tradition is to eat certain foods on every New Years.
“My family will gather around and eat pork, corn bread and some black eyed peas for good luck,” Pettibon said.
People have practiced games, money, and bets for years, and they still use these traditions today.
“My family and I play left right center with money, to see who gets the most money in the end,” senior Emily Anderson said. “My mom also makes me eat black eyed peas and cabbage.”
Popular around the country, families gather around to eat and enjoy the last night of the year and the start of the next.
“My family is extremely untraditional,” elementary paraprofessional Alyssa Blunt said. “We do a lot of different types of finger foods, desserts and kid-friendly holiday punches. We absolutely love to play board games with our friends and family. When the count down is close to midnight, we all go out to the barn and set off fireworks to celebrate the New Year.”
